Physical Accessibility Symposium
Chancellor DuBois provided opening remarks for the inaugural Physical Accessibility Symposium at the UNC Charlotte Popp Martin Student Union on March 4, 2019. The two-day event was organized by the Campus Accessibility Advisory Committee under the direction of Katie Montie, ADA project coordinator, and was a joint effort with the American Institute of Architects in Charlotte. The agenda included keynotes by Laurel Wright, chief accessibility code consultant for the North Carolina Department of Insurance and Office of the State Fire Marshal, and Jim Bostrom, retired deputy section chief of the U.S. Department of Justice’s Disability Rights Section. Topics centered around accessibility on a university campus and included accessible pathways, housing, transportation, and universal design. Close to 100 faculty, staff and community professionals attended. Based on positive feedback, the symposium will become a regular event.
